Dear Editor:

On November 13, 2007 the Bethesda Baptist Church located at 158 Mercer St. caught fire due to an electrical shortage. The entrance on both levels, the rear of the sanctuary and balcony suffered extensive damage. The Church has been worshipping at Ferris High School since the tragedy with the exception of the first two weeks following the fire where they worshipped New Bethel Baptist Church on Jersey Ave.

Bethesda Church is a 126 year-old institution located in the downtown area, Van Vorst of Jersey City. The original parishioners that erected the structure were the Trinity Episcopal Church and it was later a Greek Orthodox Church. The Bethesda Baptist Church has occupied the space since 1964.

On May 22, 2008 at the Casino in the Park located at 1 Nunda Ave., Jersey City, the Bethesda Baptist Church will host a reception to unveil the plans for the Restoration and Renovation of the church building as well as the start of its 14 month long Capital Giving Campaign.

The reconstruction of the Church is expected to begin this summer and should take approximately 12-14 months to complete. The architect for the project is Thomas P. McHugh of Massa Montalto Architects of Neptune, NJ. The McCloud Group of Jersey City is the Construction Manager.

Any questions please contact the church office, 201-434-2450 or via email at Write2bethesda@yahoo.com.

With warmest regards,
Pastor Vincent Thomas
