The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus returned to the Meadowlands Continental Arena last week with shows in their 136th edition spectacular, "America's Living National Treasure," which will run there through this Sunday (today), then move to the Nassau Coliseum in New York on March 14.
On Tuesday, March 7, the stars of the circus made their way from the 13th Street Train Station in East Rutherford down Paterson Plank Road to Continental Airlines Arena. A crowd of spectators followed along the way, hoping to get a glimpse of their favorite pachyderms or high-stepping steeds.
"We do this every year as a necessity to get the animals safely to the arena," said Alan Miller, press representative for Ringling Brothers.
Kids stood in amazement as 10 horses, 14 elephants and two zedonks - a cross-breed between a donkey and a zebra - were paraded down the road, holding traffic at a standstill thanks to their local police escort.
"I like the elephants," proclaimed bystander Sotiria Tsapanidis, 2, who came along with her mom, Cynthia. The circus will reign at Nassau Coliseum from March 14 to 19, and at Madison Square Garden from March 23 through April 17.
