Dear Editor: The recently reopened and extensively renovated Van Vorst Park in downtown Jersey City, opposite the Main Public Library, is an absolute joyful addition to this historic neighborhood and all of Jersey City. Hats off to Kevin Sluka, Director of the Jersey City Department of Public Works, for overseeing such a magnificent renovation of this precious green oasis for the enjoyment of children and adults alike. While many of us complained when the park was shut down last spring for the extensive renovations, all of us now are so pleased with the outcome. The shut down and the long wait have been more than justified. Director Sluka was the target of much criticism, but he always remained gracious and caring whenever he appeared before our neighborhood groups to discuss the renovation plan and the frequent reports he made as the renovation was progressing. The new Van Vorst Park is a beautiful place to go to relax, recreate, meditate, meet people, sit and chat, and walk along the pathways connecting the park to the local streets. The addition of a fountain has only added to the ambiance of what a park should look like. The garden for local residents is still there and neighbors of this beautiful spot of green are still encouraged to assist in its maintenance and upkeep. Living directly across from Van Vorst Park, I watched with eager anticipation, as the renovation work progressed, for the day it would be reopened. I was there among the first of the local residents to bask in the glory of the many improvements and changes that were made, while still retaining the original charm and character of Van Vorst Park. Change in this case was all for the good. It was meaningful and positive. Now let's enjoy the fulfillment of what has been accomplished -- for us, the residents of Jersey City. Again, congratulations to Director Sluka and his fine staff for such an outstanding job of beautifying Van Vorst Park. Guy Catrillo
